What started as a guest house for friends and family of Jackie M. located in the beautiful canary islands, is now listed on Airbnb as a private container home rental. Jackie, originally from Canada, has been living in Gran Canaria, Spain for 20 years with her two sons. She currently works in marketing and property investment. She believes that the home is a place to feel free and disconnect. She implemented her love for freedom and simplicity in this container home.
She wanted to step away from the ordinary and decided to go with an industrial look for the outside of the home while creating a warm homey feel to the interior. In the end, the contrast makes for a fun yet inviting space.
Jackie made sure she found a competent contractor to run the construction, and this allowed for less worry during the building process. They started by finding two twenty foot containers and connected them as a single level home in an L shape.
Once they were situated at the perfect spot and aligned correctly, they began to cut holes for the large glass doors, connecting doorways, and windows in both containers.
Once the openings were cut they prepped, framed, and installed all of the windows and doors.
The next big steps were to frame the walls, install electrical, paint, and prepare the home for move in.
One of Jackie’s favorite pastimes is spending time with her children, dogs, and gardening. She made sure the home provided the opportunity to enjoy all three by adding a covered porch, an area for grilling out, and sprinkling the yard with greenery.
Finally once the basics of the house were complete the walls could be painted, the furniture and appliances brought in, and this container house became a home.
Jamie states that she believes that when it comes to making a home is “it’s not how big the house is, it’s how happy the home is.” Here at Container Home Magazine, we think she has done a great job turning two shipping containers into a happy home.
